April 22 is Earth Day: Green Tips that Make Sense
Earth Day 2017 is coming up on April 22, and this day is meant to encourage the citizens of the world to think about the planet and think about how human behaviors negatively affect the environment. If you're concerned about the planet and the safety of the environment for your children and grandchildren, then here are four tips from our experts you can use to celebrate Earth Day this year, and do your part for a greener world.
Tip One: Switch to a Tankless Water Heater
What are you using now? There's a good chance the water heater that’s in your basement right now is an older storage tank model, which means that it’s probably wasting about 20 percent of the water it uses.
Why is tankless better? Tankless water heaters produce hot water on-demand. This means there's no tank of water sitting in your basement, and the burners aren't constantly running to keep the water hot.
Tankless systems, therefore, use about 30 percent less energy than storage-style systems. Plus, tankless heaters last an average of 20 years, which is nearly double that of storage-tank water heaters, and this means less waste in the landfill and more money in your pocket.
Tip Two: Switch to Eco-Friendly Plumbing Fixtures
What are you using now? Unless you’ve upgraded recently, you're probably using traditional toilets, shower heads, and faucets, as opposed to ones that have been designed to save water.
Why are water-efficient models better? In short, they save water and money! Low-flow toilets can cut water use by over 5 gallons per flush, water-saving shower heads can save between 2.5 and 5.5 gallons of water per minute, and water-efficient faucets can cut down on the water flowing out of your taps by over 30 percent.
Tip Three: Switch to a Water Filtration System for the House
What are you using now? If you're like many American families, you may rely on bottled water for the majority of your drinking needs.
Why is a filtration system better? To create the bottled water to meet America’s demands, around 50 million barrels of oil are needed for the plastic bottles alone. Not to mention the energy that goes into bottling the water, the water needed to create the plastic, and the carbon footprint associated with transporting the bottles.
And when you consider that the majority of bottled water is simply filtered tap water, why not cut down on the waste and install a whole-home water filtration system instead? You'll save money, save energy, save water, and save the planet.
Tip Four: Switch to Carbon-Neutral Habits

- Switch to renewable energies wherever possible
- Insulate your home better to cut down on heating and air conditioning energy
- Switch to water- and energy-efficient appliances throughout the house
- Drive less and carpool, bike, or take the bus more
- Reduce your energy and water consumption around the house
- Reuse and recycle everything you can
We’ll be celebrating Earth Day this year right along with you, and we encourage you to take part as well. These green tips will not only help the planet, but they’ll also save energy, water, and money.
